The Supreme Being said to the oyster, “I AM SENDING YOU TO THE EARTH TO WORK FOR ME.” What the Supreme Being said has to be in CAPITAL LETTERS because it seemed to be such a powerful message to the oyster, who was very tiny and small.

The Supreme Being placed the oyster where He wanted it to be.

And the oyster started to grow.

On the In Tide the little oyster found nutrition simply flowed into her every time she opened her bi valves. On the Out Tide she closed her bi – valves and digested the wonderful nourishment that had just been given to her by the Supreme Being.

After quite a long time, the little oyster had built up a huge amount of trust in her Supreme Being. She started a conversation. Remember that all the Supreme Beings’ words have to be in CAPITALS whilst the little Oysters’ are only in small letters.

“Dear Effulgent, Magnificent and Ultimate Supreme Being,” said the little Oyster, ( all small things have to use very decorative words when they speak to big things) “Thank you for my most excellent and truly fulfilling life. Every day your wondrous gifts nourish me and your servants, the In Tide and the Out Tide, care for me. Please, my most Effulgent and Merciful Supreme Being, don’t think I’m in any way ungrateful, but, it would be so good to know what kind of work you have put me here to do?”

“WHY DO YOU ASK THAT QUESTION OH SMALLEST OF MY CREATIONS?” said the Supreme Being.

“Well,” stuttered the Oyster’s bi – valvular lips, for the Supreme Beings’ voice was in such LARGE Capital Letters, “You see, your Magnificence, I’m wondering what more there is to life.” She blushed pinkly under her shell inwardly suddenly shy, afeared at her bold talk with the Supreme Being, who, after all was Inscrutable and Remote.

“LEARN PATIENCE!” commanded the Supreme Being in such HUMUNGOUS CAPITALS that the little Oyster snapped shut very quickly and stayed that way until it was time for the In Tide to minister to her.

But something had changed. In between opening her bi – valves, there was a tiny uncomfortable feeling right at the back of her that she’d never noticed before. Something seemed to be rubbing there, almost imperceptible at first. She found it was relieved somewhat if she adjusted a few things inside her.

Eventually, she became bold enough to approach the Supreme Being about this little thing that troubled her.

“Dear Effulgent and Magnificent Supreme Being, thank you for my truly fulfilling life. Every day your wondrous gifts nourish me and your servants, the In Tide and the Out Tide, care for me. Please, my most Effulgent and Merciful Supreme Being, don’t think I’m in any way ungrateful, but, it would be so good to know why I have a dis -comfort in me that I can’t explain.”

“WEREN’T YOU THE ONE THAT WANTED TO KNOW HER PURPOSE IN LIFE?” asked the Supreme Being.

“Yes, your most Divine and Wondrous One.” admitted the little oyster.

“WHAT DID I SAY?” asked the Supreme Being.

” You said I must learn patience, Sir ….er…Your Highness ..er Lord. I mean….Your Worship “The oyster was becoming so confused she had quite forgotten all the terms to be used when addressing the Supreme Being.

“WELL, HAVE YOU LEARNT PATIENCE?” demanded the Supreme Being.

“Er, no,…er maybe…perhaps, No, maybe not” decided the little oyster.

“LEARN PATIENCE!” The Supreme Beings” voice resonated throughout all of creation.

A sudden boldness overcame the small oyster.

“Excuse me, Your Divine Effulgence, if you could explain to me what Patience is, it might be a little easier for me to practise it.”

There was, momentarily, a very loud quietness in all of creation, as if everything was listening.

“PATIENCE IS THE WAITING THAT ALL OF CREATION HAS TO DO WHILST I DO MY WORK.” The Divine Voice reached all of the Cosmos, into the remotest part.

“Dear Effulgent and Magnificent Supreme Being, what IS your work?” asked the little oyster aware that a reverberation of shock at her brazenness had been registered by all of creation.

“MY WORK IS TO HOLD IN PLACE A THING OF MOST EXQUISITE BEAUTY – MY CREATION.”

“Oh,” said the little oyster. Feelings of awe flooded through her. What a truly magnificent work that must be, she thought.

“And what is my work?” she asked most humbly.

“YOUR WORK WILL BE DONE, AS MY WORK IS, WITH PATIENCE. YOUR WORK AND MY WORK ARE NOT DIS-SIMILAR. HAVE FAITH IN MY SERVANTS THE IN TIDE AND THE OUT TIDE AND WHEN YOUR LIFE IS OVER, YOUR WORK WILL HAVE BEEN DONE.”

“Thank you for your blessings, dear Effulgent and Magnificent Supreme Being,” said the little Oyster, her tiny heart engorged with happiness. And not thinking at all about manners or proper procedure she added, “I LOVE you!”

A hush fell over the entire universe and all the universes of other realms. Suddenly, the most delightful, rippling, musical chuckle flowed out from the mouth of the Divine Being. It danced like transluscent light from galaxy to galaxy, it made all the angelic beings pause in their work to listen.

The little oyster was most surprised to hear it. She had pleased the Divine Being. From then on, whenever she thanked the In Tide and the Out Tide for their munificence, she never ever forgot to tell the Divine Being she loved Him.

“Hell’s Teeth! Look at this big ‘un!”The shell dropped onto pile of shells now mounting higher and higher on the shore.

He took his rusted knife and jabbed it about in the muscular whiteness of the oyster. His friend peered over his shoulder. “Gawd, you’re right. Give here. I wonder what makes ’em do this. Some’s always much bigger ‘an others. Look at this.” He rattled an old container, examaining the contents.

“Here” he said, laying out a grubby hankey on the sand. Offshore, a junk rocked on a jade sea.

“Look”, the pearls rolled out of the tin onto the cloth. They were small, irregular things, irridescent in the sunshine.

He took the pearl from the tip of the knife as it balanced there and held it between thumb and forefinger. The men sat transfixed momentarily by the exquisite beauty that glowed against the scabbed horny skin.

“Yea, this is the biggest bugger yet!” He said and dropped it onto the rest.
